PSALM 12

Confidently craving God’s help despite apostasy

Psalms

Some think that this Psalm was made when Doeg and the Ziphites betrayed David to Saul, see 1 Samuel 22:and 23.; but it is most likely that was written during the Babylonish captivity.

Adam Clark

Telos: I want to persuade my hearers to believe God’s Word; that He will help those who seek it while judging those who apostasies.

1. CRAVE GOD’S HELP

1.1 By admitting you need His help asking Him for it

Help LORD; v1a

Why you crave God’s help? Because the Godly are no longer Godly v1b

for the godly man ceaseth; v1c

for the faithful fail from among the children of men. V1d

They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. V2

2. TAKE CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S JUDGEMENT v3-4,8

Because of the apostates words

Psa 12:3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

Psa 12:4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? Because of the apostates ways Psa 12:8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

3. TAKE CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S HELP v5-7

3.1 Because it’s particular

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy v5a

O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever. V7

3.2 Because it’s personal

now will I arise, saith the LORD; v5b

Micah 7: 6-7 Eph 5:14

3.2 Because God promises it

I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. 5c

3.4 Because God’s promise is pure The words of the LORD are pure [ lit: clean, fair, pure]

words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. V6
