Psalm of David where he pretends to be mad before Abimilech who drove him away and he departed.

Context:

Form: Poetry

Words: Praise, fear, heard, trusts v8, cry out v17

Notes: Verse 4 is the Key to the Psalm

An acrostic, unique in that Praise v1-7 leads to godly instruction v8-22 or How to be godly. The order of the Psalms is usually praise leading to a call to praise. Notice the promises of verses 7,9,10,19,20.

V1-2. Community gratiture received a blessing from God a heart filled with gratitude. ref. Prayer with your eyes open pg.153

V4. Form freedom in prayer > praise to God for a personal matter. ref. Prayer with your eyes open pg132

V8. In times of need maintain confidence in the goodness of God , why? Because there is no evil in God ref. Prayer with your eyes open pg. 115

V8-10 After recounting blessing the Psalmist turns to those around says experientially. ref. Prayer with your eyes open pg160.

V14. How God guides us through the Bible

Purpose: I want to motivate my hearers to worship God persuading them of his promises the response of right living because of the Gospel.

Sermon Outline:

1. WORSHIP GOD BELIEVING HIS PROMISES v1-7 M

Bless praise the Lord continually v1

Boast in the Lord and the humble will be blessed v2

Be promiscuous in your worship of God v3

Be prayerful and you won’t fear v4

Believe God promises radiance and that the humble won’t ever be ashamed v5

Believe God promises to save from trouble the praying v6

Believe God promises security rescue for those who fear God v7

2. PURSUE GOD IN FEAR HOLY LIVING v8-14 M

Take a mouthful of God and see how good He is

Take refuge in God and you’’ll be blessed v8

Fear God Christian and you’ll lack nothing v9 Seek the Lord and you’ll lack nothing v10 Come to God, listening to His word you’ll be taught the fear of the Lord v11 A Challenge to desire long life so you’ll see good v12 Strictly avoid all false speech v13 [Matt 5:37]

Don’t compromise in doing good

Preserve in a being a peacemaker with men v14 [Rom 14:19, Heb 12:14]

3. TRUST GOD’S PROMISES NO MATTER HOW YOU LIVE v15-22 C

God promises to see hear those who live right v15, 17

God promises to be against those who live wrong v16

God promises His presence salvation to those who mourn v18

4. TRUST GOD TO SAVE YOU WHO LIVE HIS WAY v19-22 C

Trust God to get you through many hard times v19-20

In contrast those who don’t live His way hate his people He’ll destroy v21

The Gospel summarizes the psalm: God purchases the Christians soul with the promise that he’s not guilty before Him v22
