Psalm 64

Setting:

The circumstances could be similar to Psalm 62. No mention is made of the Kings weakened condition. It is not clear if conspirators came from within or without. The enemies tongue is his main weapon.

Form: Prayer

"Hear are words of complaint and prayer….David in order to move God to be compassionate to his case dwells upon the injustice, enmity, intrigue and deceitfulness of his enemies. He closes with his eyes directed at God in joyful anticipation of deliverance from their hands." John Calvin in his Commentary on Psalm 64

Context: Psalm 63

Purpose: I want to motivate my hearers when attacked to ask God for help being persuaded He will answer their prayer.

ASK GOD FOR HELP WHEN YOUR ATTACKED v1-2

Ask God to hear you as you meditate v1a

Ask God to protect you in your fear v1b

Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. Acts 18:9-10

Ask God to hide your face from your enemies plans v2

Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. Matt 26: 3-4

2. THE REASON YOU NEED GOD’S HELP v3-6

Your enemies are unscrupulous big mouths v3-4

Verse 3. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:6-8

Your enemies are unscrupulous schemers v5-6

v5 Encourage If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: Prov 1:11-14

3. BELIEVE GOD’S PROMISES OF HELP v7-10

Believe He will shoot wound your enemies v7

Suddenly, For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like thief in the night. When people willsay’ "There is peace and security," then suddenly destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a women with child, and there will be no escape. 1 Thess 5:2-3

Believe they’ll shoot themselves in the mouth v8 Believe then everyone will fear God v9 Believe those right with God will praise Him v10a,c

Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say Rejoice. Phil 4:4

Believe in His protection, fleeing to Him v10b

He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and santification and redemption; therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord."
