Psalm 79

The Persecuted Church calls on God

Psalms

Setting:

Israel prayers for God’s forgiveness, help and judgement to the nations. Ps 74 dates this Psalm to the time of the exile. The Psalm is a juxtaaposition to Ps77 recalls God’s salvation under Moses, Ps 78 recalls God salvation under David. This Psalm 79 is linked to Ps 78 by the Shepherd-Sheep type and other themes.

a) Israel admits God has used other nations to punish her for her sins - she pleads for pardon.

b) Israel pleads for God’s judgement on the nations -why because they acted out of their own hostility. see Isa 10:5-11, 47:6-7 Daniels prayer (Da 9:4-19)

Purpose: I want to motivate the church to call on God when they experiance persecution.
