SOME of the notes, on which the following pages are founded, were discussed with Dean Stanley in 1878. A list of historical instances of the use of the Psalms, made by the Dean himself, was sent to me in 1895 by the Right Rev. H. H. Montgomery, then Bishop of Tasmania. To it I am indebted for the reference (page 358), to the reopening of the Cathedral at Moscow, after the French invasion of 1812.
Since my collection of notes was begun, the ground has been partly occupied by the Rev. John Ker, D.D. (1886), and the Rev. Charles L. Marson (1895). But Dr Ker's book was unfinished, and both he and Mr Marson followed a method of treatment different from that which is adopted in the following pages.
In Appendix A will be found a general list of the principal authorities. Appendix B arranges the historical instances, which in the text are grouped, more or less, in order of time, under the particular Psalms that are quoted. The Index contains, in addition to the ordinary matter, references to the books from which the historical instances are derived.
For assistance in the preparation of Appendix A, and for the Index, I am indebted to Mr G. H. Holden, Assistant Librarian of All Souls College, Oxford, and to Mr C. Nolan Ferrall. To Mr Holden I owe Appendix B.
